Consciousness the Ground of All Being

When the monotheist, be she Christian, Jew, or Muslim, says, "There is nothing but God", she echoes the heart-felt thought of the Hindu and the Buddhist that "consciousness is the ground of all being", as Amit Goswami has written in his book, The Self-Aware Universe.

Indeed, there are a growing number of scientists who adhere to the thought that, as Craig Hamilton has said, "consciousness, not matter, is the foundation of everything that is."

This certainly is not a new revelation, yet is very heartening for me to read.

Within the Jodo Shinshu tradition, for the faithful, Amida Buddha becomes the Name-that-Calls, the Nembutsu.

For the ardent Pure Land practitioner, there is nothing but the Name-that-Calls.

Yet Amida Buddha is still "the ground of all being" due to the effect of Buddha Recitation on the consciousness.

Hence the Pure Land practitioner places his faith in Amida's Primal Vow, for Amida, not the world, is the foundation of his existence.

Hence, the Nembutsu permeates the Pure Land devotee's consciousness, becoming the Name-that-Calls, the very essence of Amida Buddha calling to all sentient beings.

Thus Amida becomes Oyasama, the Divine Parent, Mother and Father to all sentient beings.
