The mind's sacred thread

Cotton of compassion, yarn of contentment,
Knots of moral discipline, twists of fidelity.
It is the mind's sacred thread if you have it,
O Pundit put it on me. -- Guru Granth Sahib, p. 471

In this quote from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh's holy book, the four virtues of compassion, contentment, moral discipline and fidelity are presented.

By associating these virtues with cotton, yarn, knots and twists, it is like they clothe a person's mind.

Together, these virtues are likened to "the mind's sacred thread".

In declaring "O Pundit put it on me", the author is suggesting that God grants these virtues to the Sikhs.
