This happened around 11:30PM on March 3, 2007. The location is north side of Kwantlen Park Secondary School, north part of parking lot by the portables, in Surrey, BC Canada.
I'd just walked from 132nd Street and 104th Avenue onto school property on Saturday night.
As I walked by the smoke pit of the high school, about 6 teens noticed me.
Then they looked around the portable. One male, about 5'6 confronted me and raised his fists, and feigned a hit, hoping to get a reaction.
I put my arms out in front of me and said "Peace, bro." The youth was called off by his friends, who told him to leave me alone.
Thanking the South Asian youth, I bid them farewell and went home.
I feel that the non-violent confrontation I made, including uttering "Peace" and thanking the youths to let me pass by unmolested, probably saved my life.
Had I reacted in a violent manner, I would not be sitting here to report it.
After long careful thought, I have decided not to report this to the police.

#1: this was hilarious. 6 kids looked around the corner of the portable nearest 132 St.
#2: It was hilarious to have the white dude come out to try to get me to hit him first.
#3: Why did it take a NO from the South Asian kid to call off his white buddy?
#4: In Surrey, schools and high schools near parks are crime hotspots after dark.
In my opinion none of the youths were inebriated. Except for the white youth who tried to get me to defend myself, the rest of the youths did not want to engage me.
I do not feel that telling me not to walk through that area at night misses the point.
I want to be able to walk through the Kwantlen Park area without having to encounter this more frequently this spring and summer.
The Vancouver Guardian Angels can help here.
It's also really strange that crime control is NOW getting tougher.
There shouldn't be *anyone* on school property or in the park after sundown.
Why no one is even bothering to reduce such activity like the romantic couple by the utility building at 11:30PM is beyond me.
If Surrey wants to make me feel safe 24/7, then it needs to fund the Surrey Crime Prevention Society, and the Guardian Angels.
Why? Because there is barely enough manpower for the RCMP.
In response to this incident, over the next two years, I changed my path home choosing not to cut across the school yard after dark.
I also tried to ensure that I'd never do any shifts which end at or around 11PM.
