BC Government and Vancouver Owe Japanese-Canadian Community a Lot (satire)

Currently I am reading Frank Maikawa's memoirs.

Basically the Maikawa's owned Japtown. That would actually make them the Big Boss of Japtown.

The BC government stole the Maikawa fortune, which probably was worth over $1 million ($10 million in 2014).

It was the theft by the BC government at the time that hit the Japanese community hard. Combined with the "repatriation or go East" edict by Ottawa, that destroyed Japtown.

Overall, I would estimate Japanese-Canadians lost $100 million in 2014 dollars of property and confiscated money in banks.

In short, the symbolic $21000 per surviving internment camp Japanese was cheaper than actually compensating the Japanese community.

Any apology by Ottawa, the BC government and the city of Vancouver is hollow because there actually wasn't a heartfelt effort to compensate the community. Indeed, neither the BC government or Vancouver even offered a compensation package. This is mainly because supposedly it was the federal government's responsibility.

This is a fallacy: a BC government agency stole property and money from the Japanese Canadians. This means that the BC government is responsible for creating that compensation package, even if it means a Japanese-Canadian whose deceased parents and/or grandparents were in the internment camps, then they get a BC government grant for post-secondary education. Instead, Victoria MLAs pass the buck onto to Ottawa.

Apparently the BC government and the city of Vancouver only want to attract Japanese who can afford to live in the Oppenheimer area e.g. make money from them.

Therefore any attempt to revive Japtown is for heritage purposes because that brings in tourist dollars. Furthermore, most Japanese-Canadians probably do not even know Vancouver wants to revive Japtown. That's because for them, Japtown died in 1942.

Vancouver is still shafting the Japanese-Canadians as is the BC government.

Possible proof Japtown business associations might have been like Yakuza: http://www.discovernikkei.org/en/journal/2013/04/17/frank-maikawa-7/

"When the internment time came upon us, the J-town business association organization that they belonged to (certain individuals in there) apparently made arrangements with the government, not having to go to the government’s set up internment camps but instead go to partially vacated ghost towns just beyond the 100-mile limit zone from the coast.

Thinking that the war would end quickly, father chose to go to Bridge River where we had to support ourselves without government help. Some of the organization’s leaders went to Minto, another internment camp which was just over the mountain from us. Although we were not allowed to own cars and were confiscated, once in awhile they came to Bridge River in a black limousine, five men dressed in dark suits with fedora hats to visit all households. I saw my father coming out from his room to hand them some cash. I was always snooping around and seeing gangster type movies before, to me it appeared as if they were collecting protection money like the Mafia or the equivalent Japanese Yakuza — who knows, just my thought at that time."

Respecting your elders: http://www.discovernikkei.org/en/journal/2013/03/20/frank-maikawa-3/

"Respecting Your Elders

As for showing respect to elders, it was an old Japanese traditional way of teaching for the oldest one to always be a good role model and the younger ones to follow and Mr. Hayashi was just that so had the respect. I can attest to that as I saw it all the while he was around us. Even my mother made Amy call me “ni-chan” and would correct her always if Amy called me by name (and here I knew that I wasn’t a good role model but it made me try at least, so I guess that’s the main reason behind this tradition/culture).

I’ve never seen my father address his brother as Tomekichi and always called him “ni-san” whenever he visited us from Japan. Tokio-san and Sadao-san (another Maikawa from the fish store side) were father’s nephews but they were more like Dad’s little brothers and had special close relations and ties together and they called Dad, Bun-chan. Dad called them Tokio and Sadao as he was older.

Everybody worked in harmony with each other like brothers (even if they were non-blood related) and I didn’t notice any friction at all. Everybody close called my father “Bun-chan”. Anybody listening would notice that they were close without being told. There’s more to it with this old Japanese traditional value system that meets the present day eyes of our children who might think what I’m saying doesn’t make sense in this present age."

Any Japanese in the diasphora who disagrees with this kind of thinking isn't really Japanese anymore.

A Lone Pacifist Speaks (satire)

One by one, our rights in B.C. are being lost.

While our right to protest has become eroded by legislation, not all the protesters are in solidarity. Some of them are even throwing a monkey wrench into the struggle.

However, I refuse to become militant. For non-violent confrontation works for me.

The B.C. Liberals haven't changed from my grandparents' days.

Today, it isn't the Japanese community that's under attack. Now it's almost anyone who won't follow the corporate agenda, and become the sheep at photo-ops where the participants gleefully throw our tax dollars at symbols of the attack on the environment, on the homeless, and on anyone with the guts to stand up to them.

I refuse to follow the New Left because they vowed to bring disorder and chaos; and I refuse to follow the NDP because their compassion is shallow.

For those people in power will not resist the temptation to abuse their authority. Lord Acton still has it right after all those years: "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

THE ONLY ANSWER IS NON-VIOLENT CONFRONTATION.

Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect -- the four truths I live by.

It is time for a change, people of BC. Big Business should not be contributing to a political campaign of an election, but this is why the BC Liberals are still in power. It is also why the Conservatives are in power federally.

Thus, federally, the Green Party gets my vote every four years, while provincially, it will be the Greens once again.

My reason for this is because the People have never been heard by any other party. If you think they were, then you are mistaken. As long as first-past-the-post elections are held, the voice of the People will continued to be ignored.

For it is a tradition to only pick either the Liberals or the Conservatives, but it is Big Business that almost always supports the winner because they pay for the disingenuous politicking. This includes the mainstream media in BC.

Everything on the television is merely propaganda, be it advertising or PR from Victoria.

Yet mainstream media will filter out alternate views that challenge the status quo, usually by banning it. Censorship has kept out the fact that much of the daily news is slanted in such a way as to favor the neo-conservatives, given that they have a lot of money to sue people who reveal a truth everyone but they want known.

Therefore this never was a free country. Since WW 1, Canada has routinely interned enemy aliens, be it Ukrainians, Japanese Canadians, peaceful German farmers, and even Doukhabour children kidnapped from their parents.

If this was a free country, then it would legalize marijuana. Instead, Ottawa made marijuana laws so tough that if three or more pro-marijuana farmers agreed to grow and distribute marijuana for medical reasons, then they will be falsely charged with conspiracy to traffick and spend a minimum of ten years in jail. Being that there are more than three people in that medical marijuana operation, it is also gang-related. For that they will get another 10 years. This is why in BC, the police claim that "all grow-ops are not mom & pop; they are gang-related." In this way does Ottawa manufacture gang members through their drug crime laws.

If this was a free country, then prostitution would be legalized and made a health concern too. Pandering and pimping however would remain a crime. Any dissent by the moral minorities can easily be remedied by showing them how many of their brothers were Johns, and that repression of prostitution is done mainly to avoid competition with the second oldest profession: religion.

Sadly, we cannot ban politicians because if politics were banned, we'd have more sociopaths who promise us heaven but cause hell when they can't live up to their promises.

Bed shortage at Royal Columbian Hospital Confirmed

January 30, 2007: At the end of September 2004, for approximately 10 days, I experience the bed shortage at Royal Columbian Hospital. It appears that in three years, not much has changed.

After my mild TBI in July, I was sent home after 8 days without any follow-up or therapy or consultation by a neurologist. He had no time, and I was displaying positive signs of recovery, although my personality was undergoing changes.

So later, when I went in for a schedule CAT scan, the technician notice what appeared to be a subarachnoid hematoma. They wouldn't let me leave; I was even told that if I did leave, then they couldn't keep track of me.

So I quickly called my brother to get clothes and underwear to prepare for the long stay. Most of the time during the stay, I got so bored that I signed out of my ward so I could walk around the hospital, eating the cafeteria food, reading a book of science fiction stories my brother gave to me, and especially of all, going to the hospital library filled with books related to many medical fields.

While here at the hospital, I may have spent about 10-20 hours studying the effects of psychiatric medication on schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. As well, I tried to find out more about behavior therapies for these psychiatric disorders.

I even got myself my shaver to keep myself neat in appearance. Finally, I even included my PDA so I could keep myself occupied by making diary entries.

Ten days later, near the beginning of October, I get the CAT scan. After 45 minutes in an ambulance to Royal Columbian Hospital, I wait for my appointment on the scan table and get it done. Then I return by ambulance to Surrey Memorial.

So I knew back in 2004 that the bed crisis at Royal Columbian was real.

Weeks later, around January 2005, I find out that the subarachnoid hematoma was minor, as the bleeding had stopped and the blood had either moved out of the arachnoid space into the CSF (Cerebral Spinal Fluid) or absorbed into the body. Much of the healing of this injury I attribute to meditation on thankfulness for being alive and forgiveness towards the unknown assailant.

After I returned home, I made another trip to the hospital in 2006 with my best friend Frank. I spent about 10 minutes learning more about borderline personality disorder and Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

Terms used in article:

mild TBI: I prefer the term "mild traumatic brain injury" (mild TBI) over the old term "concussion", which has been overused. The injury does not go away completely, as behavior and psychological functioning were temporarily altered for five years in my case.

subarachnoid hematoma: See: http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Subarachnoid+hematoma
"Whether through trauma or disease, subarachnoid hemorrhages are caused by blood being released by a damaged blood vessel and accumulating in the subarachnoid space."

See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subarachnoid_hemorrhage

The subarachnoid space is "the area between the arachnoid membrane and the pia mater surrounding the brain. " It is one of three layers protecting the brain, located between the outer dura mater and the inner pia mater, and separated from the latter by the subarachnoid space.

BC social Development Invites Select PWD Clients to Participate in AEEE Trial

For clients who have to report income as a person with disabilities (PWD),the BC Ministry of Social Development (MSD) has a written invitation for those clients who qualify for the Annualized earning exemptions (AEE) during the trial phase for 2013.

This invitation to participate is optional.

This means that the seasonal monthly income is deducted from the annual limit, which for a single person is $9600.

Once maximum annual income reaches $9600, income may be cut off for the year. if it surpasses the amount of income assistance.

In addition, MSD will include a statement with each monthly stub showing how much is remaining on the AEE.

This certainly then is incentive to report income and helps PWD clients who have seasonal, on-call employment.

Thus, a client meets the criteria for the Phase 1 invitation if s/he|they

  • Had disability assistance in at least the past two consecutive months; and
  • In at least one of the past 12 months, had earnings over $500 for families with one adult with a PWD designation and $750 for families where both adults have PWD designations.

However,AEE is not open to all disability assistance clients until January 2014.

because British Columbia is one of the first places in Canada offering the AEE option and anticipating that new exemption option to be complicated, AEE will be introduced in phases.

This is because of the extra paperwork including printing out the AEE balance remaining.

By offering through open invitation to clients on PWD who meet the above criteria in Phase 1, the ministry will monitor the program and make necessary changes before implementing Phase 2, which involves opening the program to all clients on disability assistance in January 2014.

During Phase 1, invited clients who opt to participate may get to give feedback regarding the exemption changes.

Overall though, this benefits clients on disability assistance whose work is seasonal.

My Transit Fare Proposal

I sent the following fare proposal to Translink. When whoever reads and responds to e-mail replies, I'll add it as a comment. Anyway, here's the fare increase proposal:
Why can't Translink make the two zones north of Fraser all one zone at $3.75 & south of Fraser (Surrey, Delta & Langley) $2.25? Crossing the new two-zone boundary would be $1.50. After all, the majority of riders use the system north of the Fraser River & they should pay more because they get all the perks like Canada Line, bus stops with Next Bus times, and the Millennium Line. Eventually (in 5 years) the fares can go up to $4 North of Fraser and down to $2 south of Fraser with a $2 boundary fee, due to the fact that the population growth north of the Fraser River will eventually rise faster than all the municipalities South of Fraser River (Delta, Surrey, Langley). This is more reasonable a fare raise than what was currently proposed because, as I've said before, more people north of the Fraser River use the system than Delta, Surrey & Langley! Now that I've given you my proposed fare schedule, let your beancounters crunch the numbers & I bet it will help afford putting in faregates at Main Street Station and Metrotown Station as well as support the corporate welfare of $60K per transit council director!!

For people who don't live in the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) or even Delta, Surrey & Langley, I suggest you Google "Translink" and do some research. The way Translink raises fares unjustly imposes a greater fare increase ridership in Delta, Surrey & Langley, who actually subsidize ridership north of the Fraser River. There are actually more riders in the GVRD who never cross a zone but only pay $2.50, but every time someone buses in from south of the Fraser River, they pay double before 6.30 PM weekdays. As well, for the 90 minutes that their ticket is good for, most people within the GVRD north of Fraser actually get to more places they want to than the few people who bus all the way out of Langley. It takes about a half hour to get to the Skytrain in Surrey from Langley, and about 45 minutes to downtown Vancouver. For most places in Vancouver proper, you're no more than a half hour from shopping and other amenities. This leaves the average person riding the bus with about 20 minutes of shopping & time to return home on that ticket!! Compare this to the 15 minutes & the fare home ($2.50) for the poor people travelling from Langley. This suggests that in about 10 years time, it'd serve the ridership south of Fraser to raise the time limit to 2 hours.

Results of email: the usual thanks, we're sticking to the fare prices. thanks for contributing.

I'm astounded because the current fares do not increase ridership. My rider ship went up because my disability allows me a yearly bus pass for $45. The planned fare hike is not going to make riding a bus as attractive as lowering it. Translink will need to do something to change our minds that their fare hike in the coming months actually to raise ridership.

One Laptop Per Child for Rural BC

Today, I plan to use the One Laptop per Child initiative and device as a way to bring creativity and innovation to children in rural school districts of BC which lack computers.

Currently I am asking the Ubuntu Linux mailing list members if they know about OLPC.

As well, Bruce Ralston of the Whalley BC NDP has been contact with the following suggestion about OLPC:

Have you researched the One Laptop per Child initiative and device as a way to bring creativity and innovation to children in rural school districts of BC which lack computers?

The Statistics of Crime Trends in BC: The facts

In BC, the popular myth is that crime is increasing dramaticly.

While crime overall has not fluctated widely over the last reported decade of 1996 to 2005, according to BC statistic on crime trends, crime rates have dropped overall with property crime dropping from 11 percent to 6.4 percent and violent crime dropping from 1.8 percent to 1.3 percent. Thus violent crime has been reduced by 0.5 percent points (28 percent) while crime against property dropped dramaticly by 4.6 percentage points (41 percent).

With overreporting in the papers, it appears that there is a crime wave of drug crime, and the statistics show that drug crime has risen from 0.5 percent to 0.6 percent, an increase of 20 percent. Quite possibly, the reason why violent crime and property crime rates fell during this period has to do with the rise in population, which supplied more potential drug addicts and even more manufacturers and traffickers, who probably rose out of poverty. As a result, drug criminals' growing affluence reduced both property crime and violence. During this same period, sangerous weapons offences increased by 35 percent from about 0.1 percent to 0.135 percent - which might indicate a rising sense of caution moderated by a 500 percent increase in gambling offences and 250 percent increase in prostitution — possibly in an effort to launder money, and more likely to show off such affluence.

Overall too, the number of youths being charges for all crime has dropped from 21 percent of all charges to 11 percent. This may reflect more the trend of the criminal population getting older rather than youth not getting into crime. The only crimes that are steadily rising are basically the moral ones, though, with petty crimes rising from 4.8 percent to 5 percent. Furthermore, in 1996, one in five persons would have been convicted of a crime while 10 years later, this decreased dramaticly to less than one person in seven. Where formerly out of 100 people, 20 would be criminals in 1996, by 2005 that dropped to about 15 people out of 100.

Over the same period of time, BC's population increased from 3,874,276 in 1996 to 4.260.246 in 2005. Quite possibly, the majority of the almost 400,000 new people in BC are too young to be committing crimes or are mainly law abiding.

Therefore, the truth is, despite — or maybe because of — the 20 percent in drug crime charges, there's been a record 25 percent reduction in overall crime.

IMHO, if the welfare rates were phased out in favour of a liberal Universal Basic Income and associated simple income tax with no caps on part-time income for UBI recipients in order to reduce poverty, then I'd bet drug crime offenses will become slightly reduced to about 0.45 percent and violent crime as well as property crime will reduce even further to just under 1 percent for the former and under 6 percent for the latter. However, I still feel that petty crime might stay level at 4.5 percent since there will always be a rising number of people falling into the underclass due to a dropout effect caused by compulsory public education and white collar predation.

The Good and the Bad: Temp Agency Clerks and Social Workers

A few civil servants (temp agency clerks) are like the little stones which make you stumble when you walk bare-foot on the beach of hard knocks.

If you resist them, then they will assimilate you i.e. reduce your funding by misrepresenting your case to a case worker.

Today, most case workers are assigned a client by "alphabetic lottery", where the client's last name is matched up to the last name of a social worker.

However, this association of worker with client changes weekly in catchment areas where client to work ratios are high and monthly where they are low.

This is because workers tend to lose their objectivity when they listen to the client's life story, whether it is told by the client or by other workers who know of hir. As well, temporary stress leave is regularly assigned to busy social workers. This job is not for workaholics because it will burn you out.

However, new clients should never divulge their life story to a worker. If a worker cannot get a background report on a client from other workers or from the archives at the Victoria office, then it is better that way.

Woe to the worker who sympathizes!

A Blast from the Past: The Britannia Nine Incident, Vancouver

In this entry, the comment will show both sides of the notorious Britannia Nine incident which shows the BC Liberals as a bunch of thugs using police to incite a riot consistently.

The only people willing to keep the peace were brutalized by the cops.

Welcome to the New World Order in BC brought to you by Premier Gordon Campbell.

It's amazing what greed does to people in power.

Essentially the SLAPP legislation and the Britannia incident criminalizes public protest.

And this violates the Canadian Rights and Freedoms act.

How I Walked Away from a Beating

This happened around 11:30PM on March 3, 2007. The location is north side of Kwantlen Park Secondary School, north part of parking lot by the portables, in Surrey, BC Canada.

I'd just walked from 132nd Street and 104th Avenue onto school property on Saturday night.

As I walked by the smoke pit of the high school, about 6 teens noticed me.

Then they looked around the portable. One male, about 5'6 confronted me and raised his fists, and feigned a hit, hoping to get a reaction.

I put my arms out in front of me and said "Peace, bro." The youth was called off by his friends, who told him to leave me alone.

Thanking the South Asian youth, I bid them farewell and went home.

I feel that the non-violent confrontation I made, including uttering "Peace" and thanking the youths to let me pass by unmolested, probably saved my life.

Had I reacted in a violent manner, I would not be sitting here to report it.

After long careful thought, I have decided not to report this to the police.
