Omni-benevolence and God

Perhaps I give too much power to God, and possibly think of Him as all powerful.

Perhaps He is an incredible scientist who began all Creation but has no power to prevent natural catastrophe or 9-11. An omnipotent God should be able to prevent things like that from happening.

If God can't do this wonderful stuff, then what is the point of worshipping?

It would be irresponsible for us to think of God the way as described above. He is a omni-benevolent being, not an omnipotent being.

God's job isn't to prevent natural catastrophe or 9-11. To wish that he did is magical thinking. His job in part is to help us use such events to turn away from sin and seek salvation.

Therefore the point of worship is renew faith in God's free offer of salvation and maintain belief that Jesus died for our sins.

With faith everything good is possible for us.
