Amy Winehouse: Could Anger Be Root of Her Untimely Death?

Although I've read that Amy Winehouse's Frank album was her best work, I never bought it; I got the Back to Black album, in which she cashes in on her notoriety.

My theory about her death is that her mum and dad had lost her when they divorced.

It broke her heart.

It was just a question of time before the issues that the breakup caused would become toxic.

Plus, she'd revealed warning signs after Frank i.e. she didn't like it, mainly cos she felt like she was manufacturing product for the label.

Also, her management team were not always looking out for her best interest.

Their reaction to the UN drug czar's comment a few years ago cinched that.

The lady made unwise choices because of anger issues stemming from her parents' divorce which she refused to get help for, even when offered help.

She's Our Amy! (poem)

She ain't any taller than me,
that great blues singer Amy.
Though she's lost more pounds than me,
those tattoos of herself, I don't fancy.
But when she sings the blues,
I learn to forgive and forget.
It'd be crazy if we both met,
and I hadda force her to choose
between being a loser and a winner,
even if it meant giving up Blake,
who I certainly think is a flake.
Sadly enough, she ain't Anglican,
so we can't call her a rotten sinner.
When she sings like a girly man,
hitting those low notes as fast as she can,
I can't help but get a shiver
running up my spine as my guts quiver,
and my heart goes pitter-pat.
Oh God! Oh Dear! Why aint she fat?
Amy, Amy, Amy! Come back to rehab,
and become the woman you were meant to be.
She can't be anyone else cos she's our Amy!

A Fan's Lament (poem)

I'm writing this song in the afternoon,
after listening to Amy sing Back to Black,
and after a few moments of contemplation,
I am off to listen to Lindsay sing,
just to drive away the cold and darkness.
There's no question in my mind,
Amy sings great; that's a given.
But Linds has the ability
to give more than she gets,
plus she's been through rehab many times.
Hopefully, that Winehouse chick wakes up
to discover that she slowly dying inside.
I can't help but wonder what drives the famous
to let their lives self-implode from within.

Who cares about the drugs? The glamour?
When all around you the homeless are starving,
got no place to stay, and slowly going insane.
You who are successful sometimes have a lot to learn;
nobody is your lesser, and it's respect you gotta earn.
If the world ended tomorrow, nobody cares.
But we, your fans, care a lot about you.

I'm still here writing, and have to get off my chest
this nagging question to ask her, if I could:
"Britney, why did you take those drugs?"
"Paris, why do you think you can sing?"
At least, Nicole Richie is fine for now.
And we all dread the day when Amy Winehouse is back on tour.
The world won't end tomorrow, but I'm not certain now.
What's up with Courtney Love? If we gave her more respect,
would she give up the jet set life and take care of Bean?
I don't know why I'm nattering, I don't know at all.
When all my favorite singing stars are tragic comedies,
all I can do is sit listening to the TV
give me five minutes here and there about them.

I don't care about the drug and glamour.
I don't dare to do more than just dance to their tunes.
I wish that these celebrities will grow some sense.
They who are successful sometimes have a lot to learn;
nobody is their lesser, and it's respect they have to earn.
If the world ended tomorrow, nobody cares.
But we, your fans, care a lot about you.
For we, your fans, care a lot about you.

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (2006) - Review

I just got ahold of Amy Winehouse's 2006 album Back to Black. This is the 10-song set; it isn't the American version. All it is is the Universal Island Record Inc version.

This album comes with a song book showing her on the cover, looking a little thin but still haning in there. While the songs are missing time lengths, their copyrights are covered, though the last song, He Can Only Hold Her, had to be settled to give P*NUT credit as writer of the song.

FWIW I found Rehab to be a thumbing of the nose at drug rehabilitation. Definitely, it's not a tune to be playing at any Alcoholics Anonymous Saturday night club dance any time soon.

In You Know I'm No Good, the feeling that Amy actually came to believes in the lyrics gives me a chill.

Me and Mr Jones appears to be a thinly veiled synopsis of Winehouse's troubles with her hubby Blake. It is listenable, and danceable too.

Back to Black is a catchy tune. I've listened to the clean version a couple times, and have also heard the many uncut versions sang during her 2007 tour in Europe and in the US. It's with this song that she's gone from jazz and R'n'B to adult blues a la Billie Holliday.

In Love is a Losing Game, we get more of Amy's melancholy, which could be the side effect of alcoholism.

Tear Dry On Their Own is another melancholic song.

Wake Up Alone is a great melody. Obviously it's a song about her missing Blake.

Some Unholy War basically is Amy and Blake against the naysayers.

Finally, completing this set is the hotly contested He Can Only Hold Her, which originated as a demo by P*NUT. In the album, credit is given to him but no co-writing credits were added. Amy even thanked him, but because these lyrics are mainly his, P*NUT sued and got those co-writer credits.

Overall, Back to Black shows the power of reality in inspiring the creativity of a potentially great singer. Sadly though, the drug scandals are not doing her a lot of good.

As for now, I've yet to hear hide and hair of Amy Winehouse. Yet having her all her songs on this album, complete with uncut versions of Back to Black, I am giving her credit.
