In order to awaken like the Buddha, be prepared to suffer.
A person who has not suffered has no stomach for meditation, and would gladly pay a guru to tell him lies rather than sit in zazen with the Zen Master nearby to whack him with a stick.
While Pure Land Buddhists have no need to be whacked, their lives are not the easy life of begging for alms and sitting in zazen.
Instead, we learn by our mistakes when we suffer for making them.
The Aha! moment happens when we meditate on why bad things happen to good people, rather than resent the good things happening to evil people.
