The Satanic Movie Dream (satire)

Last Sunday morning I experienced what I first considered to be a nightmare. On close examination by a religiously conservative audience, it might be considered an attack by the devil.

In the major part of the dream, I was given the ability to morph into a troll with a magic club due to a deal made with the devil, in exchange for my soul, instead of fame and fortune as most mortals are apt to do.

While in troll mode, I would cause mayhem but was never caught because of the magical powers of the club. Victims felled by it were not able to describe my troll-like features because of a spell placed on them.

Were they to describe the troll, the police might probably ignore them, since no human being looks like a troll. Thus, the club helped prevent identification and prevented embarrassment to the victims.

Soon I often morphed into troll form to the point where I replaced an extra in a science fiction film. Because I was a troll, I was supposed to have a speaking part in the production of this particular episode.

However, when the actor asked the question, "What is a shillelagh?", I explained without thinking, that my club is such a device, which renders mortals with amnesia to prevent embarrassment when explaining their injuries.

Naturally I was fired, because the actors then had to ad-lib the appropriate reaction rather than do a retake of that scene, since the movie was going over budget.

Later on in this dream, I also experienced the devil who had come to take my soul to Hell. As soon as he touched me and freed my soul from my body, I awoke with a start and muttered a curse under my breath.

Of course, I was no ordinary troll but an Irish troll known as leprechauns. My apologies to keepers of Irish mythology and traditions!

Apparently in this dream, I had sold my soul to the devil to have the power to change into a leprechaun at will and then sought fame and fortune.

After reflecting on this dream, it may have been due to the 5HTP health supplement that I had been taking during this time. When the 5HTP dose is converted to serotonin in the brain, the result will REM suppression and REM "rebound" just before awakening with a clear memory of the resulting dream.

Since my supply of 5HTP ran out, I have forgotten most of my dreams by the time I awaken from sleep almost every night.

Understanding 5HTP

Today I stopped by the Alive health food store to purchase their 5-htp (5-hydroxytryptophan). After ingesting 200 mg I felt the anxiety that stress induces in me to dissipate.

Even though that could be the strong placebo effect that happens when I am bathed in the glow of healthy living after visiting Alive, it's been said by researchers that 5-HTP is useful in maintenance of mood balance, sedation that promotes sleep, reduces pain and relieves migraines.

Yet serotonin is also associated with anxiety, nausea and vomiting, which are side effects of the antidepressant SSRI drugs.

For it is actually dopamine, associated with the reward system that actually result in relaxation, contrary to the assumption that dopamine is only associated with mania and pyschosis.

The truth is, dopamine and serotonin receptors are associated with those physiological effect and is the rise and fall of neurotransmitter levels that lead to the symptoms.

As I mentioned early, serotonin promotes sedation but also the anxiety-nausea-vomiting triad when stress oppresses us.

Mania and psychosis are only evidence that the dopamine receptors are involved in their etiology. When we treat these effects as evidence of the neurotransmitters, we are under the misconception that only one neurotransmitter is involved, which leads to misconceptions about them.

It is actually the sum total of stress and its effect on the brain, especially in morphing harmless schizotypies in their various manifestations (schizo-affective, the myriad schizophrenias, and even bipolar disorders type I and II).

Since 5-HTP sedates me, it could a cascade effect beginning with serotonin receptors, which in turn affect histamine receptors and the mast cells that are associated with histamine. Hence the sedation.

All in al, I still feel this is a placebo effect. Meditation helps me to remain sensitive to my environment, both mental and physical. Since I believe in what it is used on to treat (migraines, pain, and mood balance), that affects its result, sedation.

Short Meditation on Alternative Medicine And Its Spiritual Roots

In the post-modern era, anti-psychiatry is in vogue. Medications usually induce the very symptoms they are supposed to suppress. Benzodiazepines are notorious for causing suppressed anxiety, sedation and other effects which leads to more anxiety, insomnia and even seizures.

I can think of better medication using rhodiola, 5HTP, valerian, skullcap, and hearty Indian food.

If you combine this with meditation techniques and positive thinking, then stress can be handled, nervousness will reduce, anxiety will fade, and smile will always be quickly found.

All it takes is dedication and practise.

As a Buddhist I know this. The earlier one realizes that one's role in the world is to awaken others to their spiritual destiny, the better.

For such an awakening is the key to becoming better people, even if one does not become famous or successful or even a rich person.

Indeed, true wealth is found in being humble and not being attention to one's self.

At the root of this wealth is unconditional love.
