Drugs are Bad (satire)
One girl was lame.
The other girl, the oldest, was physically abused until she died of a severe beating. The younger one was abused but not as much.
This happened because the mother belied her own kids, even when the oldest daughter lied about her having sex, which started it all.
Ultimately the mom went to prison for manslaughter and was let out after 10 years for good behavior. She blamed the barbituates.
It killed Marilyn Monroe. Other celebrities did weird stuff while high on barbituates. Then they banned the sale of it. Nobody did stupid stuff like this since then, except until tranquilizers started causing problems.
As did Ambien.
MMMmmmmm pharmaceutical are bad. Illegal drugs, no so bad, except for crystal meth and crack.
We should ban drugs for mental problems.
However, people would panic because they think drugs "cure" mental illness. Actually Abilify causes schizophrenia in people misdiagnosed with the disease.
I bet antidepressant cause anxiety or what looks like anxiety but is akathasia. Doctors who mistake akathasia for anxiety up the dose, causing suicide bids. Some people died cos of that mistake.
Therefore antidepressant are dangerous when used as directed.
Drugs are bad, especially the ones you get by prescription.
Illegal ones aren't because only stupid people use drugs, stupid people like Steve Jobs. :)I remember this mvie about the two girls in Indianopolis in the 1950s who wer abused by a single mother with four kids (2 girls, 2 boys). She took in these girls because the parents were carnies and the carnie life is not for kids.

Entheogens and Their Use in Prophethood (satire)
Instead of answering God's call, these poor individuals become the schizophrenic and the bipolar, which are only man-made labels. In the end they die before a cult can be established around them.
For this is how the modern world deals with God's chosen ones.
Even though a few people become schizophrenic, this is due to stress and the inability of the person to cope with it. However, few schizophrenics develop religious delusions, because most of them are unbelievers.
In contrast, people with bipolar personality disorder make up the bulk of people with religious delusions. This is because, contrary to schizophrenics, only their mood is affected. Were it not for the moodiness, people with bipolar might have become prophets. It depends on how well they handle stress.
However, these are but medical labels which is rejected by the religious masses due to their man-made nature.
In my opinion, a person would only become schizophrenic or bipolar when she does not heed God's calling but instead treats it as a mental condition. Indeed, the atypical antipsychotic risperidone is given to schizophrenics and bipolar people. People given it develop tolerance, and need to be weaned off it. If they don't, then schizophrenic symptoms such as anxiety, delusions, and hallucinations may develop as a result.
This is why medication should be a last resort, and any psychiatrist who insists that a patient has to take it for life is incompetent.
However, from the religious viewpoint, medication is useful only when it helps to induce visions. Therefore risperidone is almost as good as fasting, though there is anecdotal evidence for marijuana and other soft drugs. Even so, because risperidone is legal, it might be useful for the new visionary to use as would phenibut. YMMV.
Just think of risperidone as a doctor-approved entheogen that only works when you take as directed up to the recommended dosage for a few months, and later try to wean yourself off them. It is during the "cold-turkey" period that the visions may appear.
So, please give risperidone a try if you are bipolar and wish to become a God's chosen one. Otherwise, avoid the booze and pot, man.

Perfection (satire)
This is because greater intellect does not preclude insanity, which is validated by schizophrenic people being of a higher intellectual capacity than a person with a mood disorder. Even though bipolar people are highly creative, their tendency toward anxiety in novel situations when not manic tends to moderate their intellect.
As for narcissistic peoples, the only thing they know about the most is themselves, so they would apply their intellect once they confirm what's in it for them, which implies the appearance of high intellect without a corresponding sense of compassion for other people. Were anyone to confront them about their past stupid mistake, things could get really ugly in no time.
Even if we were to evolve, the higher intelligence and reasoning abilities might result in the ability to learn to follow a strict moral code as well as the strong sense of compassion and mercy with the strong risk to develop schizophrenia due to sensory overload caused by too much deep thought.
While it would be cheaper to genetically engineer a human being with superior intelligence and reasoning, it would be impossible to correct the inherent genetic destiny of schizophrenia genetically since most schizophrenia is not due to a genetic predisposition but to not learning successful coping skills in response to stress.
In short, there is no gene that gives you superior coping skills. It has to be learned through experience. Thus, the superior man is not born to cope with life. Rather, he learns how to cope with life through his life experiences.
In conclusion, I reject the nanotechnology and the genetic engineering route for creating the perfect man.
Instead, all it takes is Buddhist learning to perfect the man. This includes daily meditation sessions to develop the calm mind (samatha) necessary to solving koans (vipassana).
Though, the easy way to perfect the man is to chant the Nembutsu or even the Nichiren daimoku "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo". This form of meditation is easy to do, and only requires five minutes or less of chanting daily.
Meditation itself helps Buddhists to discover that Buddha Nature inherent to their own live. Buddha Nature can be considered the perfect qualities of the Buddha which passed into the consciousness stream when he died. Superior intellect, reasoning and morality are three of those perfect qualities.
However, I won't consider this exclusive to Buddhists. Christians use the Sinner's Prayer as an aid to perfect, chanting "God have mercy on me, a sinner" out of humility. Indeed, humility is the essential key to perfection, not the science of technology.

Stress Causes Autoimmune Diseases Including Cancer (satire)
Most of our autoimmune diseases are due to lack of these nutrients. YMMV
They also help keep us sane along with the B-vitamins, Vitamin E, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, vanadium and molybdenum.
Therefore guy bacteria will keep us sane IF we don't go on a diet or on drugs.
But most of our mental problems have to do with subclinical malnutrition.
That creates all kinds of behavioral disorders that lead to mental illness, mainly due to auto immune diseases.
I even believe hereditary schizophrenia is an autoimmune disease since stress does cause high levels of cortisol which impairs the immune system. yet schizophrenic rarely get cancer because of the antipsychotics they take.
So it might be possible that antihistamine effects of seroquel might have anti-cancer effects by preventing histamines from occupying histamine receptors, leading to programmed cell death. That is, preventing histamines from occupying those receptors leads to normal death of cells.
This implies that survivors of a bad case of flu who don't medicate with cetirizine and NAC might develop schizophrenia OR cancer depending on their genetics.
That is because stress doesn't cause cancer or mental illness. Rather cortisol impairs the immune system AND the endocrine system.
Except for the boron, I'm covered. All I need is to each 100 grams of raisins to get more than 4.5 mg of boron a day. Well, that most definitely beats snorting borax.

Mental Illness as Society's Reaction to Inappropriate Honesty (satire)
Apart from the ravages of drug abuse, including the psychosis resulting from B-vitamins deficiency, which is prevalent amongst chronic alcoholics and may be part of other forms of abuse - though never acknowledged, few people would consider their fictions as the cumulative effect of the clever white lies they daily say over the course of a lifetime.
Even when we are threatened by a mortal illness which is in part due to the idiosyncratic varieties of personality and their attendant mental habits, few of us are willing to admit that it is due to lying to ourselves about reality.
Might mental illness be due to a history of white lies used to handle reality?
Maybe so, maybe not. Consider the white lies the State feeds us daily both through law enforcement (e.g. cannabis drug laws) and the media, be it news and edutainment (talk shows, reality TV, movies and advertisement).
Indeed, propaganda might be both cause and effect of the human ability to conceal the truth by not mentioning the obvious.
Schizophrenia might just be an effect of a society that cannot handle honesty and truth 24/7.
Some civilizations fell because a few revolutionaries became too honest about their current situation and caused doubt amongst the representatives of the ruling body for a specific monarchy, only to have a civil war fuelled by differences in ideology (monarchy versus nationalism and later, socialism versus free-market capitalism).
Russia's descent into communism was a post-modern example of this.
Most recently, examples of ideological warfare include the political damage control occurring in America due to Wikileaks, the recent protests in the Maghreb (north Africa from Morocco to Egypt) and in the Middle East (especially Libya, Egypt and Syria), and the hype and propaganda on cable news.
With regard to society, the honest people tend to get penalized for their honesty.
If you are honest about your taxes, you pay more taxes; if you are honest about your sexual exploits, then you tend to either get cock-blocked or end up alone in your old age; if you are honest about your emotions, then you get misunderstood. If you keep being honest, then sensitive friends and loved ones might get annoyed and either threaten to end the relationship or find someone who will tell them the white lies they want to hear.
Although I'm exaggerating about honesty to prove a point, I'd like to emphasize that total honesty entails full disclosure.
On the prospect of full disclosure, most people are adverse to expose their indiscretions to the public due to the public scrutiny which may arise as a result of such disclosures. When faced with the prospect of honesty, we'd rather baulk and wonder, "What would the neighbours think?" In the end, such honesty might lead critics to ignore the Biblical adage that "he who has no sin may cast the first stone".
If mental illness is due to society's reaction to inappropriate honesty, then mental health is the result of the individual's pro-active use of appropriate honesty.
With honesty and in the face of total disclosure, perhaps there is an appropriate outlet for it, both through journal writing and especially on-line blogging.

Schizophrenia as Reaction to The Madness Called Society (satire)
Unconsciously, the schizophrenic is more likely to break the rules and introduce novel rules, while defending society's rules to the death even when it means his loss of freedom as mental patient.
In contrast, the reason why some schizophrenics are non-compliant has nothing to do with rules but with a strong phobia about loss of autonomy.
Rather than now breaking into a long rant using evidence to back up my claims, I will instead encourage the reader to read the book mentioned in the reference below.
For it is repression of the libido that may be the first sign of stress that accumulates resulting in schizotypies (eccentricities) which might evolve into schizophrenia, depending on the social culture into which an individual is born.
It is more useful to develop a prevention strategy to reduce the effect of stress on people's psyches, to prevent schizotypies from becoming full-blown psychotic breaks which are consistently mislabelled schizophrenia of unknown etiology.
Am I denying that people with schizophrenia are schizophrenic? No, but I am denying that it is foremost a mental illness. Rather, schizophrenia is the result of social repression in that the inappropriate behaviour and especially speech which is usually repressed due to social conditioning is an internal rebellion against social rules that manifests in inappropriate external forms.
The cure for schizophrenia then is to recondition the schizophrenic mind in a democratic socialism which allows the positive inappropriate behaviour and speech (aggression leading to laughter) but disinhibits the negative inappropriate behaviour (aggression leading to violence).
This also requires other people to embrace their eccentricities, and to avoid denying that society is form of madness.

Seung-Hui's Madness
His mother wished he spoke more, and would give anything to hear him talk and misbehave, rather than him be quiet and obedient.
But rather than expose the family to censure by seeking help from doctors, she prayed that Seung-hui would talk more.
So moving to America seemed like the next best thing.
However, it didn't turn out like that, because Seung-hui never said much as a kid. And because he was never examined by a child psychiatrist we don't know if he was mildly autistic or a rare case of childhood schizophrenia.
It is said that schizophrenia is prevalent when one parent is older than 32 when a child is born. This is because it is a genetic disease. However, there may be an environmental cofactor in that when a parent is more than 25 years older than a child, difficulty in communication increases. This may be because of a combination of cognitive delay and evolution of language i.e. children tend to use code words (slang) and use language in innovative ways, widening the generation gap.
Even in high school he was quiet, and was bullied for speaking English with an accent and having a deep voice. This is when Seung-hui's madness first appeared.
To try to get Seung out of his shell, his parents enrolled him at Virginia Tech.
In his junior year, Mr. Cho told his then-roommates that he had a girlfriend. Her name was Jelly. She was a supermodel who lived in outer space and traveled by spaceship, and she existed only in the dimension of his imagination.
When Andy Koch, one of his roommates, returned to their suite one day, Mr. Cho shooed him away. He told him Jelly was there. He said she called him Spanky. SpankyJelly became his instant-message screen name.
Cho had a fantasy girl. Definitely, a sign of schizophrenia.
His junior-year roommates mostly ignored him because he was so withdrawn. If he said something, it was weird. During Thanksgiving break, Mr. Koch recalled, Mr. Cho called him to report that he was vacationing in North Carolina with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president; Mr. Cho said he had grown up with him in Moscow.
Ok, now he has Mr. Putin as a friend, and lived in Moscow. Definitely not living in the real world.
Sometimes Mr. Cho introduced himself as “Question Mark,” saying it was the persona of a man who lived on Mars and journeyed to Jupiter. On the sign-in sheet of a literature class, he simply scribbled a question mark instead of his name.
OK, then now that everyone knew of his fantasy world, and predicted he'd be a shooter, then it doesn't explain the complacency by concerned citizens.
And in the end, after seeing him talk on TV, a pastor stated that this is not the Seung-hui Cho he knew.

Schizophrenia and Mysticism (Bibliographic Essay)
Mystic religions include Sufi, Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah and Hasidism), Zen, Gnosticism and similar faiths.
Most people display a sarcastic derision of mysticism.
The reason is that they cannot unravel the mystery into its basic components, due to ignorance and prejudice.
At the root of mysticism is truth. It isn't that complicated at all. It just needs an open mind.
It is possible for a person to have a mystic vision consisting of angels and celestial beings propitiating them like the Buddha.
Erowid is also a good website to get information on Gnosticism.

Watch Out for These Pharmaceutical Companies
No, this isn't a stock market tip. Rather, this is a list of pharmaceutical companies which manufacture psychiatric drugs for ADD, depression, schizophrenia and related forms of mental illness.
They are also the ones who profit from the bio-chemical theory of modern psychiatry, which is verges on being a pseudo-science mainly because it ignores the social causes of mental illness (child abuse, child neglect, bullying and related causes).
I feel strongly that the social model of mental illness will reduce the stigma that the medical model of deficit and pathology has brought to us. Included in the medical model is the bio-chemical theory of how psychopharmaceutical drugs work.
However, without a grasp of the social model, it would be almost impossible for psychotherapy to educate the mental health consumer during therapy sessions as a vital part of proper management of symptoms and effect remission.
Astra Zeneca
Glaxo Smith Kline
Johnson
Lilly
Merck
Novartis
Pfizer
Roche
It is up to anyone concerned about Big Pharma to research each company's involvement in lawsuits, including out of court settlements with each of them and the plaintiffs, where the companies effectively "bribed" survivors of killings and suicides related to mental illness.
If I did this for you, then you'd just take my word for it and not actively participate in monitoring Big Pharm's slippery slope in providing effective medication for mental health consumers which were actually unsafe to take.
So I ask anyone who is experience with Google to search each company's name with the keywords "murder", "suicide" and "killing".
In doing so, you will actively particpate in seeing the social cost to the People by the State in following the medical model of mental illness blindly without moderation by a reciprocal social model.
Thank you for helping me out. Please feel free to post comments.
How the Schizoid Becomes Schizophrenic
IMO it's a defense mechanism that arises over time to protect the schizoid person from his own fear of the world.
For the schizoid world honors greatly the individual over society.
Medication would prevent such a person from adapting to social pressure and its influence on conforming to social norms.
As well, I feel that rather than an illness, any schizophrenia arising from maladaptation to stress to conform may consist of dysfunctional use of defense mechanisms.
Medication does nothing to help a person to become socialized. This is why it should be accompanied by psychotherapy and patience by the therapist.
I even consider the delusions arising within the comorbid psychosis that often accompanies schizophrenia to be maladaptation to stress arising from the many fears that the schizophrenic has.
While most of these fears are unfounded, schizophrenics prefer their delusions over reality since it is easier to accept them than to accept the fact that the world is not as safe as a caring family or its State-mandated equivalent.
For the schizophrenic has learned that the world is not a caring and friendly place.

Cyberbullying on Clubvibes
It's also cyber bullying when a popular online forum for club goers labels the woman who has a psychotic episode because of unconscious elektra complex transfered to an imagined love interest who'd spurned her for being too pure.
I don't know what her anxiety attacks and paranoia over imagined stalkers are called, but schizophrenia comes to mind.
the saddest form of bullying is of schizoid females who are unconsciously afraid of being intimate with a BF but are willing to show their boobs online.
Sad to see bullying is a pastime for problem drinkers with sociopathic meanness.

Interestingly, in BC Abilify needs a special order from Ottawa to fill out by your doctor to justify using it rather than Seroquel or Risperidal.
Most likely it is because Abilify is a new drug on the market, which isn't resold by Pfizer, the drug company that has a strong say in BC's pharmaceutical drug assessment.

My First Appointment With a Shrink
Within a week of March 20, 2006, I went to get assessed by a psychiatrist at Vancouver General Hospital. When I arrived there, I went directly to the psych ward and sat in the waiting room with other patients. After about 5 minutes, the psychiatric nurse at the intake desk came for me, and directed me to the assessment room in another part of the same floor of the hospital. The assessment took about 10 minutes, and the clinician asked me a series of questions which I answered based on my intent to demonstrate sanity. Quite possibly we were both anxious to get through this interview without blowing our cool.
What follows is a redacted version of a post I made on a certain online web forum. Yet much of the redacts parts have been edited to refer to previous blog entries.
The only statements in another post I made are:
my two drug experiences, my friend and roommate dying of pancreatic cancer, and my opinion that within the online community at large, you all are like family to me, because we are all part of the family called "humanity".
Rationalization of a previous post:
The use of psychological and psychiatric terms are symptomatic of my disability, which was never hidden from anyone on any online website forum.
Hence, psychosis refers to a temporary condition caused by reaction to stress, with no permanent state of mind.
Mania refers to the positive state of mind which is friendly, outgoing, and talkative.
Depression refers to the psychic state of mind resulting from suppression of mania.
As well, the term schizo (in one's own world), schizo-affective (affected by the world so as to retreat to one's own world), schizophrenic (fully in one's world), schizophrenic (causal effects which result in the treat to one's own world), etc. are positive.
Hopefully the above example shows how I borrow terminology from the psychiatric field, and use it in creative ways.
These terms are used as tools to describe projected mental states which fit my (mis)perceptions of "the real world."
However, on a web forum, its members are participating in a consensual reality.
Thus, after deliberate analysis, it is accurate to state that the members participating in this reality agree by consensus (at least two or more people) that what I state may be true, both through a reply affirming my assessment and through indirect replies e.g. when a few men have stated that if "psychosis" includes the ability to appreciate large-breasted women, then they are willing to be "psychotic." ;)
Another example is the indirect validation by a few women, which is tempered by their indirect approval of the proposed "thought experiment" to attribute my lowered psychosocial level to the causal factors of traumatic brain injury and ineffective coping strategies. ;)
However, were I to be candid with the shrink by revealing the details of the past 20 months since my recent trauma to this 6 lb universe called the human brain, he'd assume it is symptomatic of borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorder, and depression -- with post-traumatic stress disorder dominant. He would probably stop listening after I state: "my world revolves around computers." The only way I tend to make rapport with him is to keep silent about a few web forums and show him my current state of mind through a written assessment of my state of mind. Given that I will presenting a subjective report, he would be more willing to accept it as valid than a detailed description of the past 20 months. :o
I will state here that few website forums have ever mentioned a mental health professional. However, the stress of keeping it secret may have resulted in the symptoms I have been experiencing off and on over the past year. This may explain why I am now taciturn in public when under stress:
Silence in public protects the online community.

HERV-W Linked to Bipolar Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis and Schizophrenia; XMRV Retrovirus & CFS
As well, the XMRV has been associated with chronic fatigue syndrome and prostate cancer.
This leads me to speculate the following, which might be validated by medical evidence:
IMHO this may explain how mirtazapine works: its anti-histamine action affects the histamine part of inflammation. Inflammation results when mast cells are broken down by scavanger white blood cells, releasing histamine. How this may trigger HERV-W and XMRV is in part an immune reaction resulting from a complex combination of factors including stress and a viral infection, specifically from the herpes family.
Another side effect of antihistamines is sedation. Thus mirtazapine's antidepressant action may most likely be due to the thorough bed rest I get with daily dosage, which reduce my stress levels.

Schizophrenia and Genius: It's All About the Medication
In most cases, schizophrenics are their worst enemy, because they are so honest they rock the boat.
The saddest thing though, is that most schizophrenics also engage in risky behavior (drug use & drinking), and wonder why they are anxious and paranoid.
Yet some of them do not consciously see the contradiction of self medication and their fear of psychopharmaceuticals. Though, I suspect that their unconscious realization of that contradiction explains their noncompliance.
IMHO self medication usually trips up the genius.

Wild Yams Can Prevent Pregnancy
I remember reading "The Sexual Life of Savages" by Malinowski, and reading about the earliest pornographic film that has survived, "The Grass Sandwich", currently in one of the American Sex Institutes. I researched human sexuality through the ages a lot and came to the conclusion that women were once much more sexual than they have been in recorded history. I think that human culture was not stressed to survive in their environments before the last ice age, physically or socially. Societies were probably matriarchal then and much more sexual. Remnants of female sexual expression such as the isolated Trobiand Islanders visited by Malinowski in the late 19th century were now quite unique. The Pacific Islanders didn't have a word for work in their language. Malinowski recorded that women have their first pregnancy at about 25 years old even though "their vaginas are filled with men's semen" from a very young age to quote an elder Malinowski talked to. Malinowski couldn't figure out why the young women didn't get pregnant at age 16 like the Europeans.
Hormones are a very highly evolved, and complex system. I took an endocrinology course at university, and science understands very little about what evolutionary role hormones have. It is quite possible that age of reproductive capability would be controlled by the endocrine system as affected by environmental and social stress. It makes sense in evolutionary terms. When environmental stress increases you want a greater rate of reproduction to compensate for inevitable losses. When times are good, and what we would say is idyllic, you want reproduction to replace just the people lost to old age. Our sexuality isn't lost per se, it has been buried, and the troubles that adolescents girls have with self esteem, and eating disorders is probably dependent on how much we suppress and discourage their sexuality.
I was really struck when I became interested in the biology of sexuality that there was virtually no information on the subject in any of the university libraries I searched. There is no history of sexuality, no evolution of sexuality, and virtually no biology of human sexuality in any library in Canada. In fact very little is known about female sexuality. The female orgasm is marked by the contraction of the pubococygeus muscle and I've only felt that contraction during sex once in my life. The G-spot orgasm almost disappeared in the 20th century, probably the vaginal orgasm that Freud was so criticized for in the 1970's. Our ability to enjoy sexual pleasure has been seriously compromised around the world, which makes books like "The Sexual Life of Savages" and temples like those at "Konarak" windows to a world we otherwise couldn't imagine, at least not without public censure. I would guess that the virus upset our evolutionary balance and put pressure on endocrine systems to allow reproductive capability at an earlier age, which caused the population growth, which increased the social pressures and adversely affected the development and experience of sexuality in adolescence.
Chovil suggests that pregnancy is related to stress, and that stressors increase the risk of conception. He suggests that this explains teenaged pregnancy while primitive societies can have teens having sex from 12 and not getting pregnant until 25.
I guess the researcher of those islanders did not see the female village elders hand out the enourmous quantities of wild yams to the young women having sex. It is well known that wild yams contain phyto-estrogens which act as natural contraceptives.
Then he conveniently forgets about the infertile couples who barely conceive unless given hormone treatment, which may be because of estrogen-like substances leaching from plastic, herbicides and the like.
However, Chovil is right about both the biology of sexuality and the history of sexuality being a recent rediscovery. More than likely, prior to the modern era, sexuality was erased from the records by censors since the dawn of history.
One clue to this are the temple prostitutes of the Astarte cult, which may have resulted in the wake of the dominance of nomads on horseback over matriarchal agrarian communes.
Another clue are the idols of fat naked women who are possibly representations of a Neolithic fertility goddess. This woman is similar to the Irish goddess with the vulva on display.
In Japan, the mythological story of how the gods got the sun goddess out of the cave - a solar eclipse story - has one goddess showing her underparts to the other god, causing so much noise that the sun goddess was curious enough to see what was up. Quite possibly the stripper was her brother dressed in drag showing his privates, considering that cross-dressing is acceptable in Asian culture.
Overall though, the increasing stress of the world does not lead to increased pregnancy. Rather, the stressed girls are the one more likely to seek comfort in premarital sex, which results in a higher risk of pregnancy.
Unfortunately, it looks like wild yams are not a popular treat for young girls in developed nations. If they were, then teenaged pregnancy could be cured!

Am I Schizoid? Or Is This BPD?
He is worse when he is around his older sister; who behaves similarly but with a tendency to interpret deep emotional upset as due to external spiritual influence and an artistic interpretation of her own personal spiritual development, where she referred to abstract art she did as 'angels'.
Earlier, the family experienced trauma consisting of death of younger brother and death of father.
A couple days ago, I visited my friend and he only spoke to me twice out of the whole six hours I was there.
While we did not discuss greys or Zeta Reticuli, being the topic of an earlier discussion a year ago, apart from me bringing it up, he just expressed a strong belief in Jesus for about two minutes and returned to his room.
IMHO I doubt if he is schizophrenic; it appears to be either schizotypal or schizo-affective, whichever one has a love for nature and solitude.
However, his behavior is no different from 15 years ago, except that he spends more time reading the Bible.
He is less fanatical though, because he knows of my Buddhist background. This implies that he is compassionate and cares about my feelings as much as I care about his feelings.
Now if he'd only get out more and socialize...
Perhaps my friend actually appears to have Kretschmer's syndrome.
It consists of the following triad of symptoms:
(1) unsociability, quietness, reservedness, seriousness, and eccentricity;
(2) timidity, shyness with feelings, sensitivity, nervousness, excitability, and fondness of nature and books, and
(3) pliability, kindliness, honesty, indifference, silence, and cold emotional attitudes.
If he is schizoid, then my friend is exhibiting neither schizophrenic nor schizo-affective nor schizotypal behavior. Rather he exhibits Kretschmer's triad of symptoms and might be typically schizoid, without any ongoing psychosis -- apart from the only recent occurance of a brief psychotic episode in 2004.
In my own case, I share the quality of "fondness of nature and books" but am sociable, open with my feelings, and have warm emotional attitude. If anything, I admit to being mildly schizoid under stress, but feel that overall I am mildly depressed due to the recent deaths of my father and a close friend.
However, I feel that I do not exhibit any of the behavior associated with my original diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, even when under mild stress.
In different ways, I may exhibit the triad of behavior associated with schizoid syndrome similar to my friend. However, my parents' marital stability has not added trauma to my life.
I feel this is because the traumatic loss in my family happened to me in adulthood, while in the case of my friend, it occurred in childhood (loss of brother) and adolescence (loss of father and breakup of relationship between parents).
Thus I challenge the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. For I feel that I am relearning the skills necessary to control the negative aspects of the BPD, especially risk of suicide, and to accentuate its positive aspects, especially extroversion and willingness to take risks.
As well, it is becoming less difficult to control the comorbid disorder of depression. I have adapted to the mild hypomania that exhibits as insomnia by using the time while awake to express myself on this blog.
As for my friend I do not know of his own creative efforts. While I wish he would participate more often online, his anxiety about exposing his inner thoughts to public scrutiny may moderate any desire to be more friendly and outgoing.
However, the only way this is to come about is to accept his unsociability as a constant that has been there since I first met him over 15 years ago.
All this does for me is to become less schizoid, if such a thing is possible.
Perhaps I have borderline personality disorder. Being abandoned in the hospital at age 5 would have deeply affected me at the time, but it made me fiercely independent to the point of near unsociability.
Hopefully I am not over-analyzing myself in this entry.

Using the Mad to Save the Mad
In this way, it is possible to control one’s own environment and the immediate neighbourhood and to influence it.
Moreover, the healing ritual of the shaman late into the night helps to sublimate difficult somatic instincts and to channel them in a socially acceptable and legal way, without being stigmatized in the society as being abnormal or an ill-person.
In our society we have abnormal and ill people who are stigmatized daily as "mentally ill." While being educated about their illness and treated, the medication may affect them so that they are unable to work when exposed to the stresses of the modern workplace.
At the same time, conventional medicine has a stranglehold on the people. If one is a shaman, then most doctors will jealously guard their territory and look down upon alternative forms of healing, even to the point of subjecting shamans to public ridicule and even stigmatizing them as mentally ill and hospitalizing them. All this does is make modern medicine look bad.
While traditional folk medicine has a long tradition in Nepal, it must not be forgotten that what is folk medicine now used to be common practice. It wasn't until the 19th century that doctors began to believe in the disease model of health. Since then, health-care may have made leaps and bounds technologically but overall it's also created problems especially within psychiatry.
If we think of each potential schizophrenic as a would-be shaman, ignorant of hir role in society, then we have here a pool of new medical workers who can augment the hospitals and doctors in their work. While it will be tough to weed out people who are too sick to decide the best health-care for others, the results will be worth it because we will have trained health-care workers supporting doctors and hospitals.
Rather than medicating a potential schizophrenic, it would be more humane to have hir employed. Since the only purpose of medication is social control, this is malpractice. For mentally ill people who are employed suffer less from their illness than their unemployed brothers and sisters.
Note that the shaman is not schizophrenic because rather than being impaired by anxiety and fear, he is channeling his anxiety and fear in socially acceptable way, rather than being plagued by insomnia's nightmares and the descent into mania and madness.
